European Citizens’ Initiative: More Than Education – Shaping Active and Responsible Citizens

Dear Network, pic4externals

Do you believe that Europe is at a crucial moment in its history, and that our democracies are increasingly threatened and under pressure? Do you believe that the education of young people should go beyond their preparation for the labour market? Do you believe that high-quality education of civic competences is indispensable in developing and securing democratic societies?

Then YOU should join us in the fight for a more democratic and a more educated Europe!

We, AEGEEans coming from all over Europe, are using the first-ever tool for direct democracy at the transnational level to put Civic Education on the European political agenda: the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI)! The challenge that we have taken up is to collect 1.000.000 signatures from at least 7 EU Member States, and thereby to force the European Commission to discuss our ideas on strengthening Civic Education in Europe.

You can sign the ECI here (EU Citizens)  or equivalent petition here (non-EU Citizens).

But signing is not enough! Get involved as individual or local.

In order to be successful in joining our efforts and multiplying our impact, we have an ECI Task Force that coordinates and supports the activities inside our network and beyond. A lot of preparatory and administrative work has been done already, but we are looking for more enthusiastic AEGEEans to join the ECI Task Force, as the journey has only just begun!

The work of the task force is diverse and ranges from local level activities support,  PR and campaign development to event management and fundraising. Most of the work happens online and through Skype, but on 12-13 of December there will be a live meeting in the Brussels. Partial travel reimbursement will be offered.

Are YOU the help the ECI Task Force is looking for? Please apply by sending an e-mail to contact@morethaneducation.eu with the following information:

  • Your motivation to join the task force
  • Your experience in AEGEE or other relevant experience
  • Your preferences for tasks and responsibilities within the ECI Task Force
  • Your availability for the Task Force (i.e., the amount of hours per week you can spend on it)
  • Your availability to attend the live meeting on December 12-13th

Your local wants to be part of the Initiative?

Read the guidelines for the locals and come to the hangout which will answer all your questions.

In both cases join our facebook group, like our fanpage and read more on the website.

Last but not least – watch the awesome video made by Language Interest Group.

Democratically and educationally yours,

The ECI Task Force & Comité Directeur 2016-2017
