Last year, 2011, AEGEE members had the opportunity to apply to a variety of events with names that stood out. Everything from “Hakuna Matata Amsterdam” to “The lord of the nature: Return of the king.” In the end five particular events raised the bar of creativity regarding names of events.
It has become more and more popular using creativity when creating the title for an AEGEE event. The AEGEEan has chosen to put a focus on this trend and asked our Facebook followers for their help last month. The AEGEEan is working on “The AEGEEans Choice Awards 2012″ which will be part of Agora Enschede where awards will be given to locals and AEGEE members for different categories in which they have stood out. One of these categories is “The most creative title for an AEGEE event”. The AEGEEan asked our facebook followers which event they thought had used their creativity to its fullest and the nominees are:
AeGeE of Empires by AEGEE-Budapest and AEGEE-Brno
For the Summer University organised by AEGEE-Budapest and AEGEE-Brno the idea behind the name was chosen because of the historical topic of the event. Both Budapest and Brno are cities that offer monuments and great stories from different ages. These cities were parts of different empires throughout the history. The name was “discovered” in a brainstorming during a board meeting in which the idea of “AeGeE of Empires” by Tom Keller was chosen. The original name and the logo come from the video game Age of Empires. The idea was to use the inspiration from the name of the game and connect it with AEGEE, in order to achieve a lot of applications for their SU, because of the brand recognition.
“CaucAEGEEan” by AEGEE-Tbilisi and AEGEE-Baki
The name for the event was created through a brainstorming meeting within the TSU organising team and they were thinking about a name that would fit perfectly to AEGEE and Caucasus and somehow connect the two. That is how they came up with the idea to make the title “CaucAEGEEan” along with the slogan for their TSU “Become CaucAEGEEan”. Salome Machavariani, president of AEGEE-Tbilisi, describes it as: ”something special, AEGEE and Caucasus spirit”.
“City of rocks, city that ROCKS” by AEGEE-Yerevan
The local Summer University coordination team was sitting in a fancy cafe January 5th 2011 enjoying a cup of coffee/tea while discussing the name of their upcoming Summer University. The name of a SU or another big event is something that have been considered very important within the coordination team and given the fact that it have been the first ever AEGEE-Yerevan event the organisers wanted to come up with an attractive name which would be interesting for all applicants no matter which part of Europe they were from the name should make them want to come to Yerevan. The aim of the name was to have something descriptive for Yerevan and Armenia in general. That is why rocks where integrated in the name of their SU. ”In AEGEE network for sure not everybody knows that Armenia is called country of rocks, because of the beautiful rocky mountains we have. Furthermore, not everybody knows that our capital Yerevan really rocks. So we decided to use the word “rock” as a keyword for our event’s name and used it in two different meanings,” says Gayane Merdinyan, Summer University 2011 coordinator of AEGEE-Yerevan.
FinEst Wintertale by AEGEE-Helsinki and AEGEE-Tallinn

The Pre-EBM “FinEst Wintertale” is also a nominee for “the most creative title for an AEGEE event”. It was co-organised by AEGEE-Helsinki and AEGEE-Tallinn, and the title was based on a previous event the two locals had organised together: “the FinEst Fairytale Traveling Summer University of 2009.” Due to the previous successful co-operation the two locals decided to keep the FinEst tradition alive when they again worked together on the 2011 EBM Pre-event. “FinEst” is, of course, a wordplay on the names of the two countries, and since the event took place during the very cold and snowy February of 2011, the logical name for this event was “FinEst Wintertale”. This year the FinEst tale will continue when AEGEE-Tallinn and AEGEE-Helsinki once again will collaborate on a Summer University – this time called “FinEst Design”
vAEGEEtalian Restaurant by AEGEE-Treviso
Creating the title for this event was also like a tale but in this occasion more like a summer tale than a winter tale. Renzo Anelli, main organiser of “vAEGEEtalian Restaurant” organized by AEGEE-Treviso last September was the mastermind behind the name as well. He was on honeymoon in India when he came up with the idea of organising a nice AEGEE event in which the main topic was vegetarian and vegan kitchen, so he started considering what the program could contain, and what the event could be called. Suddenly it came to him that name had to contain “vAEGEEtalian” because it sounds both like vegetarian and italian, but also includes the AEGEE factor. When Renzo and his wife returned they proposed the idea about this training course, and AEGEE-Treviso was happy to join the newlyweds with helping and organising it. When discussing the name, Renzo told everybody that he already had an idea for the first part of the name, but also that if something better was going to be proposed, he was ready to change his mind. After exchanging e-mails and having personal meetings the organisers decided to keep the first part of the name. As for the second part of the name, “experience” was proposed in the beginning but in the end they realized that foreigners usually relate Italian restaurants and great food to Italy. “So which better name could we have for a training course in Italy about vegetarian and vegan kitchen (including the traditional, the creative and the exchange factors represented by AEGEE) than “vAEGEEtalian Restaurant?” Renzo asks and smiles.
The final voting for the “most creative title” award will begin alongside with the voting for the other categories, Monday 2nd of April.
