Can you believe it? AEGEE-Praha has already turned 30! What a number! And to celebrate that special occasion they planned an amazing birthday event. 40 participants from all over Europe joined, and out of my own experience -I was one of them- I can tell you it was a blast. We got to see Praha’s best sights by  foot and by boat, eat delicious Czech food, explore the nightlife and of course celebrate AEGEE-Praha’s birthday with a huge party. The birthday weekend was a full success for sure and the amazing organizers did their best to make it unforgettable. But now, let’s ask Filip Brunclík, the president of AEGEE-Prague, how he and his antenna perceived the celebration.

Happy Birthday AEGEE-Praha! How does it feel like to be 30 and what did you guys plan to celebrate this special occasion?

It feels like an eternity… 30 years is a big deal, and we are really grateful for everyone who ever contributed in making AEGEE-Praha great. During those 30 years many people helped, either as board members or just as helpers to spread the AEGEE spirit. Without every single one of them, we would not be where we are today. To celebrate this occasion, we planned a 4 days long event filled with funny activities, and enjoyed it with 40 participants from all over Europe.

It feels like half of Europe did come to Praha to celebrate this birthday. How much work was it to plan everything?

That’s true… We were really surprised by how many people applied for our event. The planning process was not easy… it was like organizing a short Summer University, but for 40 people, which is a lot to manage. We didn’t even plan to have 40 participants, but after receiving so many applications, we had no other choice but to increase the capacity, and we are happy we did so. Thanks to that we had more fun and met more new AEGEE friends.

So all the hard work was worth it in the end.

It was. After the event, many other locals reached us, and wanted to cooperate. Either just having an exchange, or organizing events together. This event was basically the first international event after a long time which didn’t take place during summer, and we were so happy to organize something big after such a long time. It gave us a lot of new motivation and opportunities to cooperate. Too bad you only turn 30 once…

How did the pandemic affect you as an organization and this special event in particular?

We were lucky about this event, since there were no serious restrictions. Only those which didn’t really affect the event, such as vaccination required in restaurantsAnd since everyone was vaccinated, participants probably didn’t even notice there was such a rule.

How much did AEGEE-Praha change in the last three decades? Do you still have an active community full of AEGEE spirit?

Three decades are too much to remember, and even more than most of our members actually are old. But yes, we have an active community full of AEGEE spirit. The pandemic actually showed us how strong of a community we have. When Covid hit us, our members started to organize online game nights almost every day. It was amazing to see that in hard times, they still want to spend time together, and that they will always find a way no matter the circumstances.

What are your plans for the next 30 years? Can you already tell us something about any upcoming events?

We plan to organize Summer University and probably create a new international project… So stay tuned to find out more.

Marija Valentina Zuvic is a member of AEGEE-Zagreb and running in this Agora for the Data Privacy Commission. Learn more about her broad experience with AEGEE, her skills, and her motivation for the position.

Hello, can you introduce yourself to the AEGEE-network? When did you join AEGEE and what were your best experiences with AEGEE so far? Which antenna(s) are you a member of? What have you already done on the local level?

I am Marija Valentina, but people call me Vale. I have been a member of AEGEE-Zagreb since Spring 2017. I joined AEGEE because of Summer University and after it, I started to be more involved in the AEGEE world. I have been on three different board positions (secretary, president, external relations responsible), and organised several events, workshops, recruitments, and many other things. Also, I have a pretty big experience on the European level. I have been Network Commissioner for the term Bucureşti-Spring Agora Online  2019/2020. I became responsible for the Baldria area. In addition, I was Vice-speaker of the NetCom in the term Salerno-Spring Agora Online. After that, I ran for the position of Comité Directeur and became Network and Internal Affairs Director for the period 2020/21. I learned a lot in different positions, from the local to the highest level of AEGEE. Therefore, I wouldn’t choose my best experience so far because each situation in this organisation helped me to grow and enjoy more in what I have. And, now here I am, still motivated to do some work and contribute with my knowledge. :)

Data privacy is very important nowadays. Have you any experiences in the field? Which of your skills make you suitable for the Data Privacy Commission?

In 2017, I was introduced to GDPR as Secretary of AEGEE-Zagreb since the GDPR had to come into force in May 2018. Together with the whole board, I had to do research on how to deal with data privacy in an organisation, and learn how to keep the members’ data in the best way possible. In that period, we adjusted to GDPR compliant platforms and communication channels, and even included Knowledge Transfer on the same topic for the future Local boards. Also, since I recognized the importance of data privacy and protection in Locals as Network Commissioner, I included GDPR sessions in NWMs which have organised in Athens and Zagreb.

In the last year, as part of Comité Directeur, I got to learn a lot about the internal communication structure of AEGEE-Europe, and in which way we are handling personal data, especially in the field of members and European Bodies management. I believe that my acquired skills during that year are making me suitable for the Data Privacy Commission. I gained advanced knowledge about internal channels/platforms, and experience in working with members because we have been forced to move completely to the digital world in the last year.

Get to know Yunus Emre Ünal from AEGEE-Ankara today! He is running for the NetCom and already has many ideas on how AEGEE can reverse the negative effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hey, for starters, could you introduce yourself to your fellow AEGEEans? How long have you been a member of AEGEE, which antenna(s) have you joined and what are your best memories with AEGEE?

Hiya there! I’m Yunus Emre, I am 20 years old and from A-Ankara. I knew about AEGEE before, however it was only when the COVID started sweeping the world that I became a part of it. At the beginning, I tried my luck with the Language Interest Group. However,  I did not participate in it after a few weeks, thinking that I had a long way to go before shaming myself in front of motivated learners :)

My best memories would be one where we (with the help of CD58, Veronika especially helped us with the edudip and I sincerely want to thank her for it) organized an event for the Human Rights Week, arguably one of the most important terms that emerged after the early-2000s. The turnout was amazing, and it felt good to be able to organize such an event while learning a lot about the subject as well.

And another would be, us, the board members going back to our office, after what seemed like an eternity (after 1.5 years of COVID, probably) and cleaning up the place. My memories of the office prior to COVID still were there, the smell and the sincerity of it all. I honestly felt like home. Now I am glad to be able to use, and visit our office whenever I want to.

Network Commission is arguably one of the most prestigious positions in the entire organization. However, the NetCom job is highly challenging. What motivated you to submit your candidature and why do you think you are suitable for it?

I’ve always wanted to be a part of the Network Commission, but I never knew if I was eligible for it. Either time constraints (being a board member in A-Ankara almost felt like a day-to-day job, with its both stressful and enjoyable moments) or the lack of experience on the European level were my initial reasons for why I did not partake in any business related to NetCom.

Now that I realize that there is no way of solving the problem of my lacking European level experience without just gaining experience (genius, right?), and knowing that I may never ‘have time’ for the things that I have always wanted to do, I believe that being a part of NetCom is a good start.

Born and raised in Turkey, which exposed me to both the Eastern and Western values of the world, I am open to any culture and its people. I believe NetCom will help me see the wider picture, and meet more people with colorful perspectives all around Europe.

What are some current policies or projects in AEGEE-Europe do you disagree with and why? Do you think some things should be changed in order to respond to the Covid-19 situation more effectively?

Covid-19 left the world in an estranged place, this is no surprise. However, while some nations were able to pick up the pieces and continue, some failed to do so, and as a consequence, these countries are still struggling. At the time I’m writing this, there are talks of the Omicron variant and the possibility of bringing the nation-wide restrictions again. This probably will hinder the developments of the locals whose governments or state officials fail to deliver in their responses to COVID. Maybe, then, there is a chance of doing something for those locals whose governments/countries have impeded their processes during COVID, or even until now.

Do you have a preferred Network Area? What would you do if you’re appointed to another?

I would like to be responsible for Kebab, as that’s where I am from, and I am familiar with the culture. If I am appointed to another Network Area, I will do my best to get acquainted with the region and its culture, since that was my primary goal of joining AEGEE in the first place.

Is there something you want to tell us? Now it’s your time to do so.

Reversing the effects of COVID might seem hard, but if we all work together, hand-in-hand, I believe we can bring life to the lessons learned from it. It is vital that we, as AEGEEans, provide equal chances for every local and their members to shine.

In this article you can find out more about AEGEE-Eindhoven and AEGEE-Tilburg’s member, Niek Lange, who is running for Chair/Vice-chair person. If you are curious about what his plans are for upcoming Agoras, don’t hesitate to click on this article!

Hey, for starters, could you introduce yourself to your fellow AEGEEans? How long have you been a member of AEGEE, which antenna(s) have you joined and what are your best memories with AEGEE?

My name is Niek, I am a member of AEGEE-Eindhoven and AEGEE-Tilburg, and I am applying for the role of Chair/Vice-chair person of the Agora. I’m an enthusiastic student of Sustainable Innovation Sciences, as well as a dedicated board member of the student political fraction of our university.

I joined AEGEE in 2018 just after starting my studies, and I have never once regretted that choice. Inspired by the stories of traveling, I signed up and some of my best memories are on AEGEE-trips. The first trip when we were ice-skating in Aachen, the cute cat at the hostel in Skopje, the gossip box during the SU in Zagreb. They all are engrained. But what makes all the memories so memorable is the amazing people you meet along the way.

You are applying for the position of Chairperson/Vice-Chairperson of the Agora. What made you choose this position and why do you think you are suited for the job?

The thought has been playing in my mind for a long time but this Agora I was finally in the right place to hand in an application for Chair/Vice-Chair person of the Agora. Shortly after joining AEGEE, I had the opportunity to attend Agora Bucuresti 2019 as a delegate, and ever since, it has been my favourite event within AEGEE. I have worked alongside the chair team in different capacities during different Agorae, through which I slowly gained knowledge on the different aspects of the event. And the more I learned, the more I was also able to critically reflect on the event itself.

We have gotten a long way since the first online Agora two years ago. Many of us are accustomed to the new way of doing things, and I find it admirable that previous Chair teams have gotten so far in moving this event online. I want to keep building upon this experience, especially in the field of communication and preparation. My focus will be on engaging everyone, so that we can all contribute and start doing more for our association. Regardless of your experience or knowledge, Agora should be a place where you can learn about the true size and scale of AEGEE.  We will have to approach the event with an open-mind, be critical, innovative, and flexible.  From the Agora fair to the European Night, from plenaries to discussions between sleeping bags, an Agora is best experienced on location. Therefore I really hope to see everyone again together in the Spring in Novi-Sad. But whatever happens, may it be online, or offline, I will always work hard to ensure the best Agora possible!

In today’s  article we want to introduce you Marcelo Meyer from AEGEE-Berlin. In this Autumn Agora 2021, he is running to become a member of the Network Commission. In the following article, you can find out more about Marcelo’s experiences with AEGEE and his motivation for becoming part of the NetCom.

Hey, for starters, could you introduce yourself to your fellow AEGEEans? How long have you been a member of AEGEE, which antenna(s) have you joined and what are your best memories with AEGEE?

Yes, sure. My name is Marcello, I have done my Bachelor in Economics in Dresden and just started my Master in Historical Urban Studies in Berlin. I joined AEGEE-Dresden in 2017 and recently became part of AEGEE-Berlin. I had so many great memories during events. I loved the Live Agorae which I joined since Agora Krakow because of their amazing atmosphere. But I also had the best moments in my NYEs in Leiden and in Moscow/St. Petersburg while spending an amazing time with friends I’m meeting again and again during events. I think one of the best moments probably was when in Agora Salerno my SU of Bilbao got announced as best SU 2019 and I was cheering through the whole hall to my fellow organizers.

Network Commission is arguably one of the most prestigious positions in the entire organization. However, the NetCom job is highly challenging. What motivated you to submit your candidature and why do you think you are suitable for it?

As a member that began working on the European level and especially on the thematic side of AEGEE-Europe early, it was always challenging for me to reach out to Locals. That is something we struggle with. This position, therefore, is something super different compared to anything I have worked on. I have been a Subcommie before, but this time you are really working on the Locals, with the Locals, and you can directly support and inspire them. Why I think I’m suitable is a very easy question for me.  I already worked as (Interim) Netcommie, and even worked in the Speaker Team of the NetCom —and all of that while writing my Bachelor’s thesis. Thanks to my European level experiences, I know how to work there and how to manage stress and time.

What are some current policies or projects in AEGEE-Europe do you disagree with and why? Do you think some things should be changed in order to respond to the Covid-19 situation more effectively?

In my honest opinion, I have no idea which policy or project I would disagree with or even why. But I do think there is the potential to change/improve a lot of things in AEGEE in order to perform better, especially in times of a pandemic. It’s a lot about automating routine processes and knowledge transfer, because we lose a lot of time in repetitive tasks we could prevent or organise better. Moreover, one big thing to improve is the PR. When I would like to convince people to join AEGEE I tell them about my amazing experiences. But having a look on Youtube for example, there is just this one old promo video that is not really a banger. So, we need cool videos that show how awesome and unique AEGEE is. And especially during the pandemic we could have used our time to start new and innovative approaches such as an AEGEE Song Contest or something similar. My goal is to try out new things and hopefully I can establish something really cool that the Network loves!

Do you have a preferred Network Area? What would you do if you’re appointed to another?

Of course I love my Network Area but, as a Network Commissioner, I love the whole network and therefore all the Network Areas! As I have been a Subcommie for Wild East and I would not have a problem to be appointed for another area than mine. I mean, we are Europeans, why would we care about that? But yes, it is always helpful to know something about the Locals and for the Netcommie, it is of course helpful if people talk in English and not in a language that they can’t speak ;)

Is there something you want to tell us? Now it’s your time to do so.

I’m a super approachable person, so whenever anyone needs something or has cool ideas they would like to forward me to try them out, feel welcome to do so. And for those people that are interested in going to the European Level but are afraid they are not experienced enough or have not enough time, just go for it! You will get to learn everything and whenever you feel like you haven’t got enough time, well, I even had time while writing my thesis. So it is possible!  We need people, and we need you to make the European level and with that AEGEE functioning! Last but not least: never ghost someone of AEGEE, imagine how sad they will become :,(. Always remember to have fun, peace and out, Marcello.

The Autumn Agora 2021 is coming up and that is why we want to introduce the candidates, running for office, to you. The Agora will, again, be held online but that does not stop our network from discussing all the relevant topics and making important decisions. Franjo Lovro Popović from AEGEE-Zagreb is running for Chairperson of the Agora. Here you can find out more about him, his experiences in AEGEE and his motivation for the position.

Hey, for the beginning could you introduce yourself to your fellow AEGEEans? How long have you been a member of AEGEE, which antennas have you joined and what are your best memories with AEGEE?

Hello everyone! My name is Franjo Lovro Popović and I am 26 years old. I have been a member of AEGEE for more than five years, I joined AEGEE-Zagreb in March of 2016 where I have been active since. I finished my studies two years ago and now I am working in victim and witness support as well as monitoring hate crime in Croatia.

I have many AEGEE memories from attending two SUs and organising two more, attending 10 Agorae, three EPMs, SPM in Köln, attending and organising NWMs and so much more. It is difficult to choose a favourite memory, but perhaps it is not about the individual activities and places, but about people that we meet along the way and connections we form with them.

More than anything AEGEE has given me the opportunity to meet incredible people and stay in touch with many of them, allowing for a much richer and fulfilling experience whilst traveling.

You are applying for the position of Chairperson/Vice-Chairperson of the Agora. What made you choose this position and why do you think you are suited for the job?

Yes this Agora I will be running for the position of Chair/vice-chair person of the Agora. I have been active in different positions in the Chair Team for a while now, all the way back in Autumn Agora Salerno 2019 I had a position of secretary assistant. Since then I have helped either as secretary assistant or job shadower of the Chair Team before joining it for this Autumn Agora 2021 as Secretary of the Agora.

I think I have enough experience and knowledge to continue the important work of the Chair Team and hopefully bring it back to live events. I am excited at the prospect of again seeing a room full of AEGEEans passionately discussing important topics and changes we want for our organisation, but bringing the added benefit of digital tools to assist with the visualisation and the spread of information. Better use of communication tools to disseminate information should be the priority in order to make Agora a more inclusive place for AEGEEans of different knowledge and experience. I believe I can facilitate that innovation and secure the transfer of knowledge to be as smooth as possible; making sure Agora remains of high quality whether online or in person.

AEGEE-Muğla just elected a new board and we want to introduce the new, motivated, board members and their plans for the AEGEE-community. If you haven’t heard about AEGEE-Muğla yet, now is the time to learn more about the antenna which is located in the Southwest of Turkey.

Hello guys! First of all, congratulations on being elected as the new board of AEGEE-Muğla. Can you tell us about yourselves?

Sup everybody! I am Atta Rajab, the president of AEGEE-MUĞLA. I am 21 years old and studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering. I joined AEGEE three years ago and I met a lot of awesome people. Joining AEGEE has given me a different perspective and made me experience stuff I never knew that I needed to experience. For example, I am managing the design and PR of our antenna. Also, I like jogging as a way to relieve stress. So, if you see me running outside don’t stop me because I could be either after a new record or so pissed off that I would take it out on you ( JK). I speak three languages and I still can’t find enough words to express myself so that’s all I’m gonna say for now.

Hello, my name is Onur Bektaş, I am 21 years old Computer Engineering student and the secretary of AEGEE-MUĞLA. As part of AEGEE-MUĞLA I met a lot of good friends and got great opportunities so far. AEGEE is like a family for me. One big passion of mine is basketball. Also, I am a huge anime boy and it’s like another world to me. But most importantly, I am a huge F1 fan.

Hi! I am Cansu Cangüven. I am 23 years old and a Medical Student. In addition, I am the HR responsible of AEGEE-MUĞLA. I have been a board member since last year and being  part of AEGEE makes me overjoyed because it brought me precious memories. That is why my nickname is Joy. Also, I’m the biggest fan of the TV series called How I Met Your Mother. I keep making references to it all the time and sometimes it annoys people. Other than that, I love painting, Sudoku, Yoga and meditation. So, I’m not gonna ask you “Haaaveee you met Cansu?”, because: Yes, you just did.

Hello there. My name is Mevce Abatay. I am 21 years old, studying nutrition and dietetics and the treasurer of AEGEE-MUĞLA. I joined AEGEE about three years ago because of my desire to travel abroad. But after participating in some events, I realized that AEGEE is much more than that: I made great friendships and I developed myself. As you can probably guess from my studies, I enjoy discovering new dishes and making them healthier. Also, I love doing sports outdoors. It gets hard to do this in Muğla in winter though. The weather is constantly rainy and cold like London.

AEGEE-Muğla is one of our Turkish antennas. But that is simply not enough to define it, right? What makes your antenna special?

What makes AEGEE-MUĞLA special is that it creates a very friendly atmosphere. The participation rate in the local activities is very high and we can see that people are enjoying it. We became a really big family.

Do you have a mascot? Tell us about your fluffy friend!

Shelly, our mascot and the fluffiest member of our family is a Caretta-Caretta turtle. They have habitats in Muğla and are an endangered species that needs to be protected. Shelly attends all our events and we are sure that she’s having a lot of fun with us.

What are your plans for the next term? Are you going to continue some ongoing projects and do you already have ideas for new ones?

We are planning on organizing many social activities and social responsibility projects in Muğla. Also, we want to organize a European-level event in cooperation with an environmental project that we always wanted to do. You will probably hear about it in our next term. Our main goal is to expand our family and to convey the spirit of AEGEE to more people. We plan to continue our speaking clubs.

We all had a rough year during the pandemic and many antennas really suffered. How did AEGEE-Muğla manage?

Pandemic conditions have hit us all hard. Even though we couldn’t catch the crowd in Muğla, we continued organizing our speaking clubs through online platforms every week. Furthermore, we organized an online LTC with AEGEE-IZMIR… We had to keep the team spirit alive!

Anything else you wanna share with the whole AEGEE-network?

We just want to thank the AEGEEan for this interview, keep in touch for news about us. See you somewhere in Europe!

Numerous testimonies of climate migrants have come to light in the last few years given that the negative effects of climate change have been steadily getting worse.

Mr. Serigne Mbaye is a clear example of what a climate migrant is. This Senegalese-Spanish social and political activist has told his story of how climate change has changed his whole life in the online newspaper, ETHIC.

In his own words: “I would like to tell you the reasons why I decided to make this trip (from Senegal to Spain). Because it was the hardest decision of my entire life. […], I had to abandon my family. Over the years, the situation in Senegal had been changing, almost without giving us time to realise what was happening. The seasons had become unpredictable and a great drought had advanced unstoppably”, he states.

Thousands and thousands of vulnerable people such as Mr. Mbaye, whose livelihood is based on fishing and agriculture, are currently suffering due to climate threats; changing rainfall, heavy flooding, rising sea levels and so on.

But, just what is a climate migrant?

The media and advocacy groups refer to climate migrants as “climate refugees” given that they are people who leave their homes as a result of climate stressors.

Climate migrants are not legally considered refugees.

As a matter of fact, “climate refugees” are defined by El-Hinnawi (1985) published in United Nation (UN) report, as “those people who have been forced to leave their traditional habitat, temporarily or permanently, because of a marked environmental disruption (natural and/or triggered by people) that jeopardized their existence and/or seriously affected the quality of their life”.

Nevertheless, these people are not legally considered refugees. According to the Refugee Convention, 1951, refugees are those people who “owing to well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion” have crossed an international border (Art. 1, 1951 Refugee Convention). Hence, the Convention does not recognize the impacts of climate change as a persecuting agent.

Is there a real link between climate change and migration?

According to recent scientific research, human migration can occur for several reasons where the environment could be one of the primary factors as discussed in  the research article, Exploring the link between climate change and migration. In this paper, the authors argue that not only does the connection between climate change and migration exist but furthermore depends on numerous factors relating to the vulnerability of the people and the region in question.

In this same line, Kaczan and Orgill-Meyer in their article, The impact of climate change on migration: a synthesis of recent empirical insights, declare that migration is a “multi-casual phenomenon” where any climate-associated factor contributes to a population’s decision-making process with regard to their own mobility since the authors assume that vulnerability and capability are the main variables to take into account in this complicated matter.  In the IOM report, Migration and global environmental change: future challenges and opportunities,  it is argued that there are 5 broad categories which influence the decision to migrate:

In the IOM report, Migration and global environmental change: future challenges and opportunities,  it is argued that there are 5 broad categories which influence the decision to migrate: Environmental disasters, political issues and forms of governments, social and educational factors, economic factors and demographic variables.

Therefore, there is a chain of events whereby all the paths that stem from greenhouse gas emissions can be seen to merge into a final common pathway, which inevitably leads to population migration – be it due to water scarcity, food insecurity, rising sea levels, extreme weather events, or others. In other words, greenhouse gas emissions are directly and indirectly forcing people to move against their will.

The United Nations estimates that an unprecedented number of people – more than 82 million at the end of 2020 – had to move against their will from their homes.

About 40 million are internally displaced within their home countries due to disasters provoked by climate change, according to a IDMC report, and they are referred to as “internally displaced persons” or IDPs.

“Internal climate migrants are rapidly becoming the human face of climate change. By 2050—in just three regions—climate change could force more than 143 million people to move within their countries”, according to Groundswell: preparing for internal climate migration report by the World Bank Group.

It is undeniable that climate migration is an issue of great concern since climate change is playing a main role in this catastrophic scenario. Apparently, public institutions seem to be more and more aware of the serious outcomes of climate change and in consequence, are implementing measures which seem to be effective, at least at a first glance. But, are these measures really enough to stop the climate change chain reaction on migration?
