Check out our new trainers in The Academy!

Patrick - AEGEE-Aachen

        Patrick – AEGEE-Aachen

“I have been a member of AEGEE for almost six years and have been the most active in Human Resources (HR) and Network field; as a board member (HR responsible)  in AEGEE-Aachen, and as the Network Commissioner and NetCom speaker. Also, I’ve been active in everything related to our general assemblies – as Agora organizer (Incoming coordinator) at Agora Aachen and Chair Information Technology (IT) technician; and recently our operative planning reform – by developing the methodologies for the pilot European Ideas Factory (EIF) in Gliwice, which has culminated in the EBM reform.”

Martje – AEGEE-Utrecht

Dear future co-trainers, my name is Maartje Natrop, I am a Dutchie, therefore obviously quite direct, very open, and If I am not at the University studying Communication Science, I freelance as a corporate trainer and work as a corporate/internal communication advisor. I have lived in several countries and I am very passionate about cultures, languages, travelling,

Martje –AEGEE- Utrecht

and meeting new people (just like every AEGEEan, I guess). Fun facts about me: I am addicted to indoor cycling, chocolate, and watching TV shows.

Of course I also devote some of my free time to my local, AEGEE-Utrecht, where I am the president of the Events Committee, and organise Local Training Courses (LTC). For example, in February, I organized a fundraising LTC. In December I was a participant in European School 1 (ES1) and just now I came back from Training for Trainers (T4T). I hope to start training very soon and share my knowledge in the field of (intercultural) communication, soft skills, and fundraising, and to start putting all the training skills, methods, and theories I learned into practice.

Caro – AEGEE-Passau

My name is Caro, I’m 22 and exactly three years ago, in April 2009 I started my long-term relationship with my beloved antenna AEGEE-Passau, where

Caro – AEGEE-Passau

I am the current president. Since I joined AEGEE I’ve had the chance to meet so many friends, to shape the Europe of tomorrow, and to develop myself to the extent I could not imagine before. Through AEGEE I experienced what it means to dedicate a lot of energy to youth work and also what it gives back. Now, as a member of the Academy I want to share my experience and support others in their development. I get a lot of motivation and energy from helping others, and for me, delivering trainings is a challenge but also a big pleasure. I am passionate about motivation theories, intercultural competence, communication, and international teamwork. I am eager to develop my knowledge in other fields such as emotional intelligence. Besides AEGEE I gained some experience in organising and facilitating international youth exchanges and in managing an international student network. I am really looking forward to being a member of the Academy family!

European School of Entrepreneurship

5-12 December 2011

Catania, Sicily

I’m a billionaire, sang Travie McCoy. So will we. Meet the young entrepreneurs of AEGEE!

The European School of Entrepreneurship (ESE) was a real pioneer in every sense among all the AEGEE trainings. It was not just the first edition of ESE, but also the topic was uttermost interesting since it did not deal with internal issues as other European Schools. The entrepreneurship and self-employment are also ones of those subject areas which gained more importance in the past years, as it was stated that these can be one of those solutions in one’s life which can help to get out of the crisis.

Discovering European School of Entrepreneurship

The first time I heard about the European School of Entrepreneurship was in Alicante and I found it an amazingly good idea at the very first moment. Being the part of the biggest interdisciplinary youth association of Europe, I felt the need of different possibilities of self-development, and this European School was perfect to fill the gap.

Everyone wants to be a part of ESE

ESE was a result of a great cooperation: the host local, AEGEE-Catania coordinated the work perfectly, what has been done by the main coordinator, Peppe Gianni was really impressive. The trainers came from AEGEE-Academy, the Youth Unemployment Project, Network Commission and the YoutHub Catania Student Incubator. AEGEE-Catania invited several external speakers which spiced up the entire week and according to the evaluations, the participants found it motivating and incredibly useful.

Important lesson learned

The more than 20 European young people had a very active week: they could learn about the way of creating business plan out of their business ideas, the way how to sell it to business angels and future costumers (marketing skills, elevator pitch and so forth) and how to maintain the successful operation of an international and multicultural team, how to coach people and how to develop themselves by the help of personal SWOT analysis. They also got extensive knowledge about the finances of a company in order to be prepared to create an entirely feasible business plan what they had to present in the end of the week.

And what was the lesson of the week? That we need definitely more trainings which are dealing with the “outer world”! That week was a perfect sum up for all my Bachelor studies, but it was definitely much more interesting than those boring university lectures and seminars…  And last but not least: AEGEE-Catania is one of the best host locals I have ever met, it was a great experience to work with them!

Vishwa Yuvak Kendra and AEGEE are partners since 2010 through the Beyond Europe Flagship Project. Beyond Europe organised a series of activities tackling the Millennium Development Goals with partners from India and South Africa. One of these activities was a Case Study Trip to India. During this trip, one of the organizations that visited was Vishwa Yuvak Kendra. During this first meeting strong links were created and the participation of AEGEE members in this International Certificate Course in Youth Work was the first big result of a long term partnership.

Ramón Martínez is an independent trainer, facilitator and consultant from the north of Spain working with INGOs, institutions and companies through creative methodologies in such areas as competences development, motivation, self-directed learning, inclusion, gender, international cooperation, etc.

Every box is inside another box.

International cooperation is a huge need both for personal and social development. Some decades ago European cooperation was a dream to reach. Year by year, actions such as being part of international working groups, studying abroad or organising events with participants from different countries have become normal part of our lives. Now that we can say that the goal is achieved, we can set the next.

From 1st to 23rd December 2011, Vishwa Yuvak Kendra, VYK, the International Youth Center of India organized their 9th Certificate Course in Youth Work. This meeting was different to previous ones, as it became the first international edition with three AEGEE participants.

This certificate course aimed at a holistic development of participants. Providing training in skills and competences, giving the basic guidelines on Indian law, policies and NGO management and helping youth workers understand the structure and needs of the community.

From the European perspective, there are many interesting keys to learn from this course, the excellent combination of formal and informal learning methods, a great number of professional and varied speakers and trainers from different backgrounds and specialisations and the inclusion of side activities to complete the training, as library research or yoga lessons.

Even so, the mixture of European and Indian participants was the most worthwhile added value. Both during the course and even more during leisure time. Sharing values, ideas, attitudes and reactions, seeing another way to act or view situations and cooperation in problem solving ended up being main elements responsible for the personal growth of all participants, impossible to achieve in a non-mixed context.

The course included a 3-day field trip to Wardha district, a small area in the state of Maharastra, during which the participants could see the activities of a local NGO dealing with agriculture development, income generation and women empowerment. It was a perfect real example of the topics that were theoretically shown in the weeks before and a motivation boost for participants to take initiative and start activities or form their own NGOs in their local levels. It was also a good chance to see how participants merged together and improved in many different aspects.

This certificate course was the first one organised by VYK with an open call for international participants. First of many we hope, since the successful results of the cooperation between Indian and European participants has opened the door for future and continuous international projects.

This is the beginning of a new branch of international cooperation with huge potential. Next steps are in our hands.

ACA is back with its recruitment, looking for the potential and talent all over the network. New members are joining in order to help us out! The AEGEE-Academy wants to have the best trainers and trainer-wannabes to contribute to the development of our members.

These are our new players:

Katja Behrendt

I´m Katja, 26, from Aachen. I like to try out new things and I like challenges, so during my 7 years in AEGEE I did many different things: I first became active on the local level as SU outgoing responsible, then board member (PR, later external relations). With 3 “crazy” people from my antenna we decided to organise an Agora in Aachen, and I was in charge of FR. Then I became Vice-Chair of the Agora/EBM which led to my efforts to reform the EBM . Currently I´m in the Members Commission.

I like that AEGEE offers you try out different roles and serves as a kind of playground, or, as a well-known AEGEE member puts it: “AEGEE is a learning organisation”. It is learning by doing and trial and error. Trainings can prevent you to make mistakes others have recently made. This is partly why I want to join the Academy: with my experience I want to enable other AEGEE members to realise their ideas and dreams. And it will offer a new challenge for me!

Milica Luković

I saw it in a cup of coffee: double letter “A”! I swear – and it happened:  I applied for the AEGEE Academy!

During the pastt 4 years, I grew from curious, innocent, don’t-know-anything baby member to ‘older’ member with plenty of experience in projects, trainings and AEGEE meetings. Being a board member of my local, Network Commissioner and Subcommie were very valuable for my personal development, but the important thing is to share this experience with other members.

I am one of the members who joined the most NWM’s, I finish my studies in Fashion Design, I’m 24 years old, happy, I can predict the future from a cup of coffee, live in Belgrade, Serbia, and will always be a proud member of AEGEE-Beograd.

Ramón Martínez

Ramón Martínez is an independent trainer, facilitator and consultant from the north of Spain working with NGOs, institutions, and companies through creative methodologies in areas as competences development, motivation, self-directed learning, inclusion, gender, international cooperation, etc.

Keep in touch with ACA, because this is only the start of the re-evolution!!

Here they are back again! The AEGEE-Academy board is more motivated and active than ever and has decided to give the AEGEE-Academy (ACA) a 180º turn in order to ensure its correct functioning and maximum contribution to the to AEGEE’s network.

With the aim of bringing the ACA closer to the network and making the most of AEGEE’s potential, we decided to meet in order to draft the strategy for the upcoming months.

During our meeting in Brussels, in AEGEE-Europe’s headquarter, we discussed, planned, argued, debated, and brainstormed for long hours to bring the ACA to its best shape, just like in its glorious years.

Get ready for many new trainings full of skilled trainers, inspiration and lots of passion which will for sure bring many unforgettable memories and will change you for better to become those skilled and efficient youth activist we want you to be.

And now…

Meet the people who are making this change possible:

Miguel Gallardo Albajar- Speaker

Miguel was elected for a second term as Speaker of the AEGEE-Academy and he will do his best to lead this amazing team until the Spring Agora Enschede 2012.

He has been actively involved in the local and European level since 2007. He was President in his antenna and still has an advisory role there. He founded the Environmental Working Group at the Agora Valletta with some crazy friends, with whom he also participated actively in all steps of the Flagship Project 2008-2009 Sustaining Our Future. He also contributed to publications like the Members’ Manual and several Key to Europe editions. He has also been Subcommie of the NetCom for 2 years.

In the training world he is a great fan of SUPS, a training course which has been a great pleasure for him until now. He has also been involved in PRES2, ES1 and provided the content for several NWMs and LTCs. As he said during Agora Alicante: “AEGEE has given so much to me, that I will never be able to give back enough”. But he tries hard by sharing his experience and motivating new members to pursue their dreams!

Edouard Mougin – Secretary

Edouard is one of the most recent Academy members, but he has lots of motivation to be the new secretary of this inspiring board. He started on the local level by being the secretary of AEGEE-Lyon in February 2010, then became President and now he is External Relationships Responsible. Eager to discover the European level, he started by being Juridical Commission subcommissioner and later was elected JC President.
Always looking for more experiences and news things to learn, he also recently joint several projects about developing HR in AEGEE with the NetCom and the newly created Human Resources Committee. In this field, he will also be the contact person for the upcoming HRES Kyïv 2012.

Esperanza Rodríguez – Treasurer

Espe is the new treasurer of the Academy, ready to study the numbers and any other challenge that may come up!

She is not a really old member in AEGEE, but she climbed the career ladder rather fast. She is very involved on the local level and has organised many kinds of events, including an ES1. She has also been in the board of AEGEE-Las Palmas as a treasurer, fundraiser and she is the President right now. She got really inspired during the ES1 and decided to become active on the European level too. She has been the President of the Audit Commission since Alicante, and was re-elected in Skopje.

Miroslava Garzarcikova – Human Resources Manager

Mirka has been an active AEGEE member for several years already. First on the local level (board member and later President of AEGEE-Bratislava) and then also on the European level – she was a project manager of “YOUrope needs YOU 2” and trainer for the Academy.
Last year, she was in the Comité Directeur 2010/2011, in charge of Human Resources.

Outside of AEGEE, she is working full-time in an international recruitment event agency, so she’s fully dedicated to the world of HR management.

Luis Alvarado Martínez – PR Manager

Luis Alvarado comes from AEGEE-Las Palmas and is a hyperactive AEGEE addict. After trying AEGEE out for the first time, he could not stop, and ever since he has been looking for more. He has been, and still is, active both on local and European level of AEGEE.

Throughout his AEGEE career, he has been the President of AEGEE-Las Palmas, advisory board, and currently he is External Relations responsible. He has also been Subcommie of Sara Vierna, and at the moment he is Network Commissioner for Spanish, French and Portuguese locals. He has also been involved in projects and in the training world. After having attended several AEGEE trainings  like LTC’s, being an ES1 participant and coordinator, attending an ES2 and external tranings (like Leadership Summer School by IFISO, or International Work School by Spanish Youth Council and European Youth Forum), he has become addicted to them, and is always looking for an excuse to attend a new one.

At the moment he is also involved in the Spanish Youth Council, working in the International Relations Committe. He has been trainer at SUPS, Manager of ES1 Passau and he is contact person for ACA for the next Traing 4 Trainers.

Florence Franks – Projects Responsible
Flo has been an AEGEE-addicted since 2008 and has participated in several European events within and outside AEGEE. Currently, she is also involved in other international project teams. She is a member of the Culture and Education Working Group. Of course she loves travelling, exploring ,and meeting cool people. She likes people that “read, every day, something no one else is reading. Think, every day, something no one else is thinking. Do, every day, something no one else would be silly enough to do.”
She believes in the AEGEE motto: “We Make Europe Happen!”, for this reason she is an enthusiastic volunteer, addicted to trainings, and projects.
She started the AEGEE adventure being Vice-President of her first local, now she is enthusiastic member of AEGEE-Siena. She has been PR responsible in the Culture Action Days project and AEGEE25 project. She was part of the coordination team of Leadership Summer School 2011, organized within IFISO platform, and she is looking forward to contribute to the 2012 edition. In the Academy she will take care of the projects, ensuring a nice, smooth, and proper communication with hosting locals, trainers and ACA board. She will support PR and the implementation of new projects.
As if all this was not enough, we also count on the endless suport from Guillermo García Tabarés, HR Director of Comité
Directeur 2011-2012! Thanks to him once more.

Academically yours,

The AEGEE-Academy Board

Miguel, Edu, Espe, Mirka, Flo and Luis

Heroes will Rock Europe in Spring again!

Who? Where? What?

YES! For the second time in the history of AEGEE Europe….

H
uman Resources European School (HRES) – the one-week training event on HR – will take place again! This time the little baby of AEGEE-Academy, HRES will be born in a marvellous city of Ukraine – Kiev. According to doctor examinations, the birth will happen between 1-8th April, 2012.

Baby?! How did this story start?

Once upon a time, in the summer of ‘69 2011 AEGEE-Academy aka ACA had finally some time to relax. As we all know, this is not common behavior by the AEGEEans even after the SU period, so no wonder that ACA felt that something is missing in his life. He realised that he is feeling really lonely.

ACA had a lot of thoughts in his mind and a hole in his heart. Suddenly he had an idea:

He needs someone, the most perfect one to share his life with and create together something really cool, something what could make them and also others busy, a lot of fun and happy for a long time! It is a really difficult thing to find someone for this dream.

After almost losing hope to find “the one”, ACA thought that actually this “she” could be the one finding him, why not? So he gave an open call to the AEGEE network describing his wishes, his parameters “the most attractive body in the network” and preferences towards “the one”.  There were quite some very tempting applications, so ACA had a really hard decision to make…

Finally, after a long emotional torture he has found “the one”. She is from Ukraine, her name is AEGEE-Kyiv and she is perfect for him. This is how the love story started.

The first dates in August 2011 went really well, so thanks to this, they are excitedly waiting for the “fruitful outcome” of them, who will arrive 9 months later – in April 2012 – with the name “HRES”.

The first steps in the relationship…

There was something still missing… the doctors! So the next step was to find doctors who could be there in the pregnancy period and assist by the birth. After some rounds of open calls, 2 enthusiastic doctors (=managers) from Budapest took the challenge and responsibility to handle the baby project and contribute to the birth event in Kiev. In order to have the very best outcome, in February the docs will search for the best 3 nurses (=trainers), 25 enthusiastic medical assistants (=participants) to participate at the event in Kyiv and make the HRES born again! After this romantic start, AEGEE-Kyiv and ACA got on pretty well, moving to the thinking stage of their relationship: clarifying their vision and starting discussing about financial issues. AEGEE-Kyiv, as a very caring and enthusiastic partner was working hard to create the best circumstances, she also asked for a “family aid” (=grant) from Youth in Action. Unfortunately, this one thing didn’t work out as planned, but the relationship was much stronger than to block at this point.

 Current situation

ACA, A-Kyiv and the docs are already working hard on the preparations. They already got to know each other, discussed their expectations of each other, agreed on a timeline, responsibility and task division etc. So the labour room is getting prepared for the birth of HRES ;)

Stay tuned for the next chapter of the story and pay attention to the open calls for “nurses” and “medical assistants” in February!

In this happy relationship & HRES project, 5 people are already highly involved:

Kateryna Kozhemiakina, AEGEE-Kyiv – local coordinator; Andrii Otrishko, AEGEE-Kyiv – former president, first steps of the relationship;

  • Eduardo Mougin, AEGEE-Academy – contact person from ACA; Annamária Németh, AEGEE-Budapest – co-manager; Bernadett Pólya, AEGEE-Budapest – manager.

A group of amazing and tremendously efficient organisers, 5 inspiring trainers, and a group of 20 dreamers joined as participants and formed the different pieces of a puzzle. They saw that AEGEE’s everlasting project, the Summer University Project, is only the begining, the first door which opens millions of possiblities to thousands of young Europeans, welcoming them to the youth NGO world, were we all belong today.

During this event participants where able to learn on topics such as budgeting, event planning and follow-up, leadership and teambuilding, team motivation techniques, working with intercultural teams and everything about the Summer University Project of AEGEE Europe.

It is up to them now, to go on and “continue the story”.
All this would not have been possible without the amazing effort of our heroes from AEGEE-Kraków, who gave us all a masterclass on dealing with an international event with the support of the Youth in Action Programme, funded by the European Commission. We have no doubts that all the participants had experiences that were touching and which they will carry in their hearts all throughout their long and bright career in the youth world.

We wish them the best of luck and we are sure that they will be able to have the impact on people they are searching for, contributing in this way to the European and global picture of youth volunteering.

Yours,
Hara Kogkou and Costas Deltouzous from SUCT, and Katre-Helena, Miguel Gallardo and Luis Alvarado from the AEGEE Academy

Dear Network,

The last European School 2 was held quite some  time ago already. Maybe you remember the successful ES2 which  was organised by AEGEE-Poznan in September 2010.

It is time to motivate and prepare new people to take responsibility at the European level of AEGEE with the upcoming ES2 in our network!
But the question is: WHERE will that be?
Is your local brave enough to accept the challenge to be the host local of this ES2?

Do you want to offer the perfect place for a highly anticipated and much-needed training that will form a new generation of creative, active and communicative AEGEE members?

If your answer to all of these questions is YES, don’t hesitate  to apply! Because we are looking for YOU to host this ES2!

We encourage you to believe in your strength, gather all your motivated members, prepare a nice application and send it to us!

The training should take place January, February or at the beginning of March 2011.

                The DEADLINE is OCTOBER 20th!

Below you can find some more information about the concept of the ES2 and about what the organising local is expected to do.

In case you have any more questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us via

WHAT IS ‘’EUROPEAN SCHOOL 2’’ ?

The ES2 is a one-week training course focusing on higher project development within the framework of NGO work. The ES2 is a place for visionaries to blink to the future where youth leaders get together and work on building a solid base for future projects together.

The ES2 is AEGEE-Europe’s most advanced training course which aims to motivate and prepare people to take responsibility at the European level of AEGEE.

WHAT HAS TO BE TAKEN CARE OF BY YOUR LOCAL?

– Providing adequate accommodation for the participants (20-25) and staff members (6-7) (Arranging 3 meals per day and coffee breaks)

– Taking care of the necessary logistics for the training programme (rooms for training sessions and technical equipment)

– Fundraising to support the event and taking care of the budget

– Preparing a creative and exciting social programme!!

– Providing the necessary documents (invitation letter) for participants who need visa

– Within the budget (if possible): reimbursing the trainers’ and participants’ travel costs (partially or totally)

WHY SHOULD YOU ORGANISE THE ES2?

First of all, it is a great opportunity for any local to contribute to the formation of the new generation of AEGEE leaders.

Secondly, it is a great chance to promote your local within the network since all participants – they will be very active AEGEE members in the future – and staff will remember the great job you did!

Thirdly, it’s a huge learning experience in organising a qualified international training and create a good impression to your University or partners.

And last but not least, it is the perfect means to motivate your members by living the exciting atmosphere of an ES2 and getting AEGEE spirit from highly motivated participants during the social programme!

THE APPLICATION OF THE HOST LOCAL SHOULD CONTAIN:

Motivation of the local for organising the ES2

– Information about the local and city:

Past events organised, number of active members, experience, accessibility + means of travel

Fundraising experience:

Has your local organised an event within the framework of the “Youth in Action” Programme before? If so, how is your contact with your respective National Agency? What are your recent fundraising successes coming from non-EU sources? Which possibilities (grants, sponsorships) can you imagine for financing the training, other than “Youth in Action”? Can you host the event without funding through YiA?

Information on potential logistics:

Locations for training sessions, lodging, catering, the distances between the lodging place and training
locations, copy facilities

Provisional budget for the event including expected fee for approximately 20-25 participants and 6-7 trainers

DearAEGEEans,

First of all, we are happy to cooperate with the Public Relations Committee and take part in The AEGEEan! From now on you can follow all of our news and more in this online magazine.

Let us begin with the remarkable news of the last months. This AEGEE-Academy term has been marked by two cases. One of them was the huge renewal of members in the board with the consequent need to find new team dynamics. Another one has been the need to discuss the reforms in WG’s and the role of the Academy in the AEGEE structure and its HR strategy. Apart from these topics, we have also put a lot of effort into organising the expected trainings. Some of them already have beeen realised, some are coming soon.Take a look at our news and get ready for the upcoming surprises!

As always, we encourage you to write to us, whether you have suggestions, ideas, or thoughts you would like to share: board@aegee-academy.org
