Back in November 2015, AEGEE-Chișinău intended to provide courses in Human Resources at the Human Resources European School (HRES), which got postponed until this Summer. For this edition, however, the HRES is combined with the SU of AEGEE-Chișinău, and you can choose to merely follow the ‘HRES bit’ of the SU, and you can combine the ‘HRES bit’ or AEGEE-Chișinău’s entire SU with another SU… As Leo said, “you had my curiosity, but now you have my attention”. Ana Gancearuc of AEGEE-Chișinău was, again, kind enough to explain everything to us.

HRES 3The AEGEEan: You also organised an HRES in 2015. Is the same group of people responsible for the ‘HRES bit’ of the HRESSU?

Ana: Yes, is the same group of people plus some new board members, that help a lot in the organisation, but the group of trainers would be different.

How exactly is this HRES different from its previous edition?

This HRES is combined with SU, and as the previous edition didn’t take place, we postponed it for the Summer.

We have extended the activities with the training for two weeks now, but, people who are only interested in the part with the HRES, can apply solely for that. Moreover, the ‘training part’ will be a bit shorter during the HRESSU than it would have been during the HRES.

.
HRES 2So, it is possible to attend just the HRES, instead of the entire SU. Could you tell us a bit more of how the HRES is integrated with the rest of the SU?

It is indeed possible to attend only the HRES instead of the entire SU. The SU lasts a total of two weeks, seven days of which, being Saturday the 16th till Friday the 22th of July, are allocated for the training itself.

.
It is possible to go to the HRESSU and to another SU. Why and how did you manage to arrange this?

People who applied for another SU already, can apply for HRESSU as well, but only via email. As via intranet it won’t be possible.

Why? Because we want to give the possibility for other members that want as well to come to our HRESSU to be able to attend the event. This will not only be a SU, but also a HRES. In order for the network to benefit as much as possible from the HRES, it might be a good strategy for AEGEEans, who interested in HR, not to miss the opportunity to participate in the HRES. That is way the SUCT granted us special permission for participants of other Summer Universities to participate in our event too.

HRES 5Why did you decide to integrate the HRES with your SU?

As we postponed the event, we thought of combining it with SU. We would have something that is more like a European-School-Summer-University-event, which would be different from what we’ve done in the past years.

How is your SC+ SU different from the SC+s of AEGEE-Madrid or AEGEE-Aachen?

Well basically; because we have a training course about Human Resources, which will be held in English. Meanwhile, the SC+ of AEGEE-Madrid has a language course, and only people with intermediate Spanish can apply. The same thing with AEGEE-Aachen; their SC+ is only for participants who speak German.

HRES 4Thank you for the interview, do you have any final remarks?

We are organising an amazing event and we hope that people will apply. Just because it’s a training, doesn’t mean that it will be boring; we have divided the hours perfectly and combined them with an amazing program, trips, activities, social program that there’s no way you won’t like it. But be fast, cause the deadline to apply is Sunday the 12th of June.

AEGEE-Chișinău’s SU lasts from the 14th till the 27th of July, and, if you want to know more about the HRES, check out our previous article here

One of the best part of being in an active and engaging group is that everyone can help each other reach their full potential in order to make the most use of each individual’s assets. This process is also known as Human Resources. After organising Local Training Courses (LTC) and Regional Training Courses (RTC), AEGEE-Chișinău decided to help people become experts in Human Resources at the Human Resources European School (HRES). Ana Gancearuc, former HR responsible for AEGEE-Chișinău and main organiser of HRES, was kind enough to tell us all about this training course with members from all over Europe.

AEGEEan3The AEGEEan: What, in a nutshell, is HRES?

Ana: The long explanation is Human Resources European School, a seven-day international training course that aims to empower youth NGO members – who are involved in the field of Human Resources – to develop, implement and manage HR strategies in their organisations.

Why did you decide to host HRES in Moldova ?

Because we are a very hospitable country and we have good and friendly people that can’t wait to meet all our participants. We have a beautiful city and a beautiful country and we’d love more people to find out about Moldovan traditions and culture.

What do you think is the most amazing bit about the HRES?

For me personally, working in the field of HR, is an amazing opportunity to gain knowledge on the challenges and solutions in HR management in youth organisations. Participants will learn what it takes to effectively attract, select, integrate, develop and maintain members. They will gain skills in the field of recruitment, group dynamics, motivation, conflict management, training design and delivery, leadership. Also they will get an insight into the impact and significance of being a student multiplier on a societal and a personal dimension. Trainers will consult and feedback each other on best practices and HR concepts used at home.

AEGEEan2Why do you only aim your training course at young NGO members?

As we are members of AEGEE, one of the biggest European organisations, we focus first of all on our members to become more professional and get the knowledge they are seeking for. But we don’t close the door to people that are not necessarily members of NGO’s or members of our organisation. We welcome everybody who has interest in our projects and training courses.

Do you expect any young NGO members, who are not a member of AEGEE, to attend this training course?

The Academy provides some exceptional and professional trainers and I know that many NGO’s are looking forward to participate and be able to get the knowledge for their organisations, such as AISEC, BEST and different Youth Organisations from Moldova. Even my work colleagues form the HR department are very interested to participate.

Why did you decide on only allowing a maximum of 20 participants to attend your training course?

I think a group of 20 people is more easy to manage and everybody has the possibility to interact with each other and know each other during the whole week of training. But most important, as we are a small country, from a logistic point of view the hostels we have here can host maximum 20-25 people. And we would like to keep the whole group together, rather than divide them through the city.

Participants have to pay a fee of €100. What do the people get for this amount of money?

As everybody from AEGEE already knows, especially the ones who organised at least once a Summer University, the expenses are pretty big if you don’t have sponsors who can help you get things for free.

So basically for this €100 fee, participants will have a nice place to sleep, three meals per day, all necessary material for the training course and we reimburse 50% of the travel costs for the trainers.

We don’t have grants or financial help from anybody and we must achieve our goals from what we have. As we all know this is voluntary and nobody has a salary from what they are doing in AEGEE.

AEGEEan4

One of the requirements for the participants is that they can communicate in English fluently. What will happen if a participant’s proficiency in English actually seems to be too bad during the HRES?

Moldova first of all is not such a close or accessible location for most antennas, and I think the people who are going to apply and who already applied for HRES, are members who really know what they are looking for. And to be in a country, for a full week of training in the Human Resources course you must like it. Probably board members  and HR responsible are the most interested in this training course. But, as we are all open to help each other, I don’t think there will be a problem in helping each other so everybody gets the knowledge the trainers will provide us.

Of course before the training itself, we are going to get to know the participants a bit better, find out more about each other, and see if anybody from the applicants needs more help with English.

Cluj-Napoca is  a Romanian city located in the heart of Transylvania, but no AEGEEan needs to be told this because she/he already knows it. AEGEE-Cluj-Napoca organized many events lately : Human Resouces European School, YVote convention “Pluralism of the media” . The NWM is coming soon and so is their Summer University. How do they manage to do all these? The AEGEEan interviewed  Alice Mogojan, President of AEGEE-Cluj-Napoca and main organizer of the YVote convention.

The AEGEEan: Tell us the history of the antenna: how old is it? Do you have many active members? How did all started?

Alice: AEGEE Cluj-Napoca was born in 1991, 9th of May, on Europe Day. This day was elected to emphasize our purpose to erase all the prejudices among the historical, social and cultural differences though Europe.

Our antenna is the first one from Romania and one of the firsts in Eastern and Central Europe. I cannot say that we are a very big antenna with a lot of active members, but the members we have are really interested and devoted to AEGEE projects. And I think this is the most important thing in a team; to have people that really care for what they do… everything will be well and on time organized in this way.

HRES by AEGEE-Cluj-Napoca

How come you decided to host the Y Vote convention “Pluralism of the Media”?

Let me tell you how I think it happened. During Agora Rein-Neckar from Germany, there was a stand where two beautiful girls were talking about Y Vote Project. This seemed very interesting to me because at the same time I was implicated in a non-AEGEE project (a local one), but with the same idea – let’s show to students why it’s important to vote.

I had some stickers with Rock the Vote (that was the name of the project), we made a sticker exchange and I talked a bit with the girls about Y Vote aaaaand… in October we got an email asking us if we want to host one of the Y Vote conventions from 2014.

Of couuuurse” was our answer and we were really happy because we have the chance to organize another big event and hopefully with European funds, a fact that happened in the end. We won the project, got the budget and organized a greaaaat event, as the participants and trainers said.

Summer University 2013 by AEGEE-Cluj-Napoca

How did the members received the news of facing the organization of another important event? In autumn you also organised the Human Resources European School, which was a great success.

Oh, it was a great feeling. Since May we were a new board and it was like a challenge to have all these events in one year: HRES, Y Vote, NWM, and the traditional SU.

And about how our members faced the idea of another important event… I think everybody is much more excited if we are going to organize bigger events. You always have to do something new, and that makes you to be active.

In AEGEE it’s really important to be part of a European event, to see how everything works… then you know the real AEGEE spirit, not when you just talk about them.

Now, NWM it’s next. Are you ready? How is the preparation going?

For all of us it will be our first NetWork Meeting, so it’s going to be awesome because we will have a lot of things to learn about European level and how to keep the members active. A lot of new members are implicated in this event, which is good because they will learn more about AEGEE, about AGORA and maybe they will want to become active at a European level next year, who knows?!

The preparation is great. Actually we have everything done. It will be nice because we will be in a cottage from a village around Cluj-Napoca. We will have a city tour in Cluj Napoca, but after that we will breathe fresh air for 3 days. Everything you have to do, you will do it better when you are in nature, far away from civilization and the hustle and bustle of the streets.

    How about your SU?

Our Travelling Summer University around Transylvania for meeting Dracula is already a tradition. This year will be the 12th TSU organized by AEGEE Cluj-Napoca.

We do not have sea and sunny beaches in Transylvania, but we have lovely Carpathians, legends, traditions, castles and a big character – Dracula. Everybody loves him. We love him. He brings us questions from tourists that we would never think about ; it’s really fun. Oh, and let’s not forget about vampires. Muhahahaha!

Every SU was a crazy one. Everybody was happy that they chose our Summer University and they broke the stereotypes they had or they heard about Romania; and that’s very important for us – this is why we love the AEGEE spirit.

This year we will sleep in 4 different places: 3 beautiful cities and in a cottage on the mountain. We will visit at least 4 castles, we will have rafting, a day in the biggest Adventure Park in Eastern Europe and a trip on Transfagarasan, the best road in the world, according to Top Gear.

“I’m ready to play, coach Dracula!” will be a TSU based on sport and culture, so we will have contests, a lot of activities, great stories and all combined with our 58 degrees water (famous ţuică). What could be better? We are sure that you will fall in love with Transylvania!

rural life during SU

What is the secret of being so active and organizing so many important events?

Well, I don’t think that we have a secret for this. In my opinion, the most important thing is to trust your team when you coordinate something. If you trust them, then you will work as a team and everything will be done perfectly and on time.

Also, it is important to have friends on your local, not to be just AEGEE members and to be really interested on the projects that you are going to organize. At least, this is how it works for AEGEE Cluj-Napoca.

There is no doubt that this antenna has plenty of resources and motivation. What’s next? Agora?

Hmmm… AGORA is a big event and we have to think about it seriously because if we want to do it, we want to be perfect! In 2015, Cluj Napoca is European Youth Capital, so… but wait, I cannot tell you more because we do not like to talk about something and not be able to do it; we prefer to do it and after that we can talk about it (with a huge smile on our face :D).

The Summer University period may be over, but the Summer University Coordination Team (SUCT) is already getting ready for the next hot season. First step – forming a team. Here is where Anna Kotovych from AEGEE-Kyiv comes in. She is this year’s candidate for the position of Project Manager of SUCT and here is what she has to say.

AEGEEan: Tell me a little bit about your experience in AEGEE.

Anna: I joined about three years ago and since that time I have become a true AEGEEan. I started out as a helper in an SU and in a year I was able to experience what it is like to be a participant of one. For almost a year now, I have been the Events Responsible for AEGEE-Kyiv and in this short time I have organized and taken part in numerous events. The biggest for me was this year’s Human Resource European School (HRES) and this year’s SU –”Shoot the moment”.

You have already moved on to the European level as the Public Relations (PR) responsible for the Visa Freedom Working Group (VFWG). What’s next?

I decided that I want to do something more, not only on the local level. As I really like the SU project, I have decided to do more than just to be an organiser of one. I want to give something back to it on the European level.

How do you want to contribute to the SUCT? What are the goals you set if you are elected?

I want to keep the content of the SU project thematic, as it also needs to teach something. Of course, SUs are a great place to party and relax but it is also important to learn something new and improve oneself. This is really a great medium for cultural exchange and we should not forget about it.

What about you? What makes you who you are?

For the biggest part of my life, I have danced. Since I was six years old, to be exact. I have done many types of dances. It all started with ballroom dancing and then, after a small break, I switched to hip-hop and contemporary dance. Unfortunately, I received a trauma and that is actually why I switched to AEGEE. It is true when they say “everything happens for the better.” The disappointment of having to quit dancing was balanced by the excitement of my new AEGEE life.

Is there anything you always have with you, even if you forget your wallet, phone or keys?

Previously, I always had my camera with me. However, as my hobby is developing, I am getting more and more gadgets for my camera, like different lenses. Naturally, it is becoming heavier and heavier to carry. But I am into photography and I take my camera to each of my trips. Apart from that, I always like to travel and to try some new dishes. I am open to trying something new and I like all kinds of different food.

Do you have a motto that you try to follow in life?

I do not have an exact phrase, but I believe that one needs to enjoy life, to do what you want now and never
regret what you have done in the past.

Are you also planning to join the board of AEGEE-Kyiv in the upcoming term? If so, what position? Are you sure you will be able to find time for everything?

I will of course be running for the board of AEGEE-Kyiv. I am not sure if I will still take the position of Events Responsible, but I am keeping it a secret for now. I am also sure that I will be able to combine the responsibilities of a board member and those of SUCT. If anything will need to be sacrificed, it will not be either my AEGEE-Kyiv or my SUCT responsibilities.

With a mountain of experience behind her, Anna is ready to implement it in improving the work of SUCT and making the already great and beloved SU project even better. Let us wish her the best of luck at the upcoming elections.

Summer is the time of Summer Universities (SUs) for most antennae. For most antennae, the organisation of a SU is enough to keep everyone extremely busy. This is the moment when AEGEE-Kyiv stands out from the crowd.

Just in the month of August, they not only organised an incredible travel SU with AEGEE-Kharkiv, but also managed to do a trip with the local project ALOT (AEGEE Local Trips), at the same time preparing an exchange with AEGEE-Leipzig, getting ready for a conference on non-formal education and packing for the next ALOT trip which is going to take place this weekend. All this is also the reason why they have been chosen as AEGEE local of the month.

Some of the board members kindly agreed to give The AEGEEan an interview. Let’s see what they had to say!

The AEGEEan: You have many projects going on at the same time, both on the local and European level. Where do you find people to organise it all?

Mariya Burachenko, PR Responsible of AEGEE-Kyiv, was the one to answer first:

We care very much about our members and try our best to make them grow as personalities. At the moment we have few permanent long-term projects such as ATC (AEGEE Training Camp), AEGEE Training Challenge, ALOT  which are running on local level. ATC includes all the thematic trainings and has such goals as improving the skills of AEGEE members in PR, HR, FR, as well as self-development. We’ve got amazing speakers who really know what AEGEEans need. How? Easy- there are no better trainers than former AEGEEans who reached their goals and are now ready to share their experience with others. AEGEE Training Challenge serves as a tool to encourage members of the Network to reach for the stars, checking the results of each other, half-playing half-working people and not noticing how the game turned into a competition. It will last till October when the best scored one will get an award! Good luck, guys!

Apart from the competition results, what are the other plans for the future?

The only one thing left to add to our “done” – list is European Boards’ Meeting (EBM) in Kyiv. This year we did not receive the right to organise it but we will try again for sure! The nearest plan – LTC for knowledge transfer of all the AEGEE-secret-techniques for the new members. It is going be held in the end of September and everyone is invited. Guests are always welcome. We are also planning to make a youth conference about non-formal education in the end of autumn and are looking forward to our exchange with AEGEE-Leipzig.

Which are your favorite projects of the year?

Anna Kotovych, the Events Responsible, took the stage:

Out of short-lasting, it is Human Resources European School (HRES) that we organised in spring and SU. HRES was more stressful, as it was during working and studying time, but we managed to organise it on the high level. Among my favorite is also the long-lasting project ALOT, which is really successful in bringing our members together, while traveling all around Ukraine.

No wonder that Dima Kononenko, the President of AEGEE-Kyiv, could not simply pick one project. With pride for his local and gratitude to all the members he said the following:

We organised HR European School (thanks to Kateryna Kozhemiakina for great coordination of this project) and Summer University “Shoot the moment” (Olia Yushchenko, Anna Kotovych and AEGEE-Kharkiv made this event unforgettable). Also we provided our members with two long-lasting projects – ALOT or AEGEE Local Trips (Maxym Kovalenko prepared every trip with passion and real AEGEE spirit) and ATC (every workshop was hardly prepared and perfectly organised by Lidiia Akryshora). And we had a lot of not so big local projects, but every project is my favourite, because they help our members to be a part of active youth and to realize their ideas.

Olia Yushchenko, Network Commission & AEGEE-Kyiv, and Dima Kononenko, President of AEGEE-KyivAEGEE-Kyiv members have been having a lot of fun in other antennae lately. I have heard some rumors, but I want confirmation. How many flags did members of AEGEE-Kyiv manage to steal this summer?

At the moment we have just one flag of AEGEE-Moskva. It was stolen by our team headed by the treasurer (and at the same time our Network Commissioner) Olia Yushchenko during the European Night at the Network Meeting (NWM) when all the attention was devoted to the Russian table.
But also we have a mascot of AEGEE-Madrid, which was just too easy to get! The board did not notice that it vanished for a week! So Retirito has a new home with care and love in Kyiv.

The Agora is coming closer and closer. How many people are going there from your antenna?

We filled all available places with active and motivated members. We will rock the Agora in Budapest!

The AEGEEan will remember these words and keep a close eye at the antenna’s performance at the Agora.

A big thank you for the photos to Anna Kotovych and Roma Kudriavtsev, AEGEE-Kyiv, as well as Eugeniy Grinchenko.

Human Resources European School (HRES) – Kyiv, 1st – 8th April 2012

During one week, young people from AEGEE and other organisations gathered in Kyiv to improve their knowledge about human resources and to live through a wonderful experience together.

Are you more of an implementer or a shaper? Is everything alright regarding human resources in your local? If your answers are no, no idea, and it can never be, you might be interested in taking part in one of the next HRES.

When I applied to this event, I did it because I observed some problems in my local and I was wondering what we could do, as a team, to improve some issues such as motivation or division of tasks. I got accepted.

Next stop: Kyiv

First I thought I was going to simply land in Kyiv, then I discovered my journey was going further. My fellow comrades and I actually landed in HRlia, a new world for me where the inhabitants are called HRliens and the leaders called trainers. There were four trainers: Bernadette Polya (AEGEE-Budapest), Irina Buruina (EFPSA-Europe), Elmar Kristapsons (BEST LVG Riga) and Guillermo García Tabarés (Comité Directeur). Their aim was to accompany us in our journey to this new and wild territory.

Next to them, we could find some more familiar people : the AEGEEans from Kyiv. Their friendliness made us felt at home and they shared leisure time with us and gave us a nice insight into their food and culture, even if some of us missed a good dark coffee from time to time.

Thanks to our four guides, we made our ideas clear and improved our knowledge on human resources. One week is short when you enjoy what you are learning, but we could tackle the main topics : recruitment, motivation and keeping up performance, communication, team building, coping with different personalities, need for analysis, and solutions to resolve problems.

Please describe a tea bag

The approach was soft and through experiments. We did many games. The one that stuck to my mind is the one where we had to describe a tea bag, which proved to be a very clever approach. After dividing us in two groups according to our personality test results, we were given a simple task : describe a tea bag. While one group remained at describing the material, size, texture – objective features – the other added emotional elements – subjective features. When each team had to show the other group its work, eyebrows were risen from each side. Everyone was thinking : “They got it totally wrong!” or “They missed a part of it!” Then we received a big lesson in humility : both groups did shape up, according to their understanding of the task.

Important lesson learned

Eventually, we all understood that in order to make a team work efficiently and in harmony, tasks have to be clear and not ambiguous, communication is a key element in all human exchange, every kind of personality can be an asset to teamwork, but as HR responsible we have to be able to make each of us able to make his/her talents blossom for the common good.

Letter to myself

The last day of the training was the climax. We finished doing some yoga, relaxing, thinking of the knowledge we gathered, reflecting on ourselves and our development and aims. We also got the opportunity to let the people we shared the week with know what we thought of them and what they gave us. I think no one could deny that opening this envelope with all the comments from our colleagues was a special moment. I kept the envelope and I have a look at it from time to time. Also, I am really looking forward to receive in seven months the letter I wrote to myself and to see what my expectations were and whether I fulfilled them or not.

When I arrived and after the first days, I could realise all the mistakes and wrong paths we chose in the previous work of our newly formed local. I think this Human Resources European School is an important step for each local that wants to improve its functioning on the local and European level. All in all, I would advise anyone to do it, because you get to know new and amazing people, you accumulate new knowledge through experience sharing and you get to discover a new country and the numerous ways that a potato can be cooked. You get to know a new part of yourself.

Heroes will Rock Europe in Spring again!

Who? Where? What?

YES! For the second time in the history of AEGEE Europe….

H
uman Resources European School (HRES) – the one-week training event on HR – will take place again! This time the little baby of AEGEE-Academy, HRES will be born in a marvellous city of Ukraine – Kiev. According to doctor examinations, the birth will happen between 1-8th April, 2012.

Baby?! How did this story start?

Once upon a time, in the summer of ‘69 2011 AEGEE-Academy aka ACA had finally some time to relax. As we all know, this is not common behavior by the AEGEEans even after the SU period, so no wonder that ACA felt that something is missing in his life. He realised that he is feeling really lonely.

ACA had a lot of thoughts in his mind and a hole in his heart. Suddenly he had an idea:

He needs someone, the most perfect one to share his life with and create together something really cool, something what could make them and also others busy, a lot of fun and happy for a long time! It is a really difficult thing to find someone for this dream.

After almost losing hope to find “the one”, ACA thought that actually this “she” could be the one finding him, why not? So he gave an open call to the AEGEE network describing his wishes, his parameters “the most attractive body in the network” and preferences towards “the one”.  There were quite some very tempting applications, so ACA had a really hard decision to make…

Finally, after a long emotional torture he has found “the one”. She is from Ukraine, her name is AEGEE-Kyiv and she is perfect for him. This is how the love story started.

The first dates in August 2011 went really well, so thanks to this, they are excitedly waiting for the “fruitful outcome” of them, who will arrive 9 months later – in April 2012 – with the name “HRES”.

The first steps in the relationship…

There was something still missing… the doctors! So the next step was to find doctors who could be there in the pregnancy period and assist by the birth. After some rounds of open calls, 2 enthusiastic doctors (=managers) from Budapest took the challenge and responsibility to handle the baby project and contribute to the birth event in Kiev. In order to have the very best outcome, in February the docs will search for the best 3 nurses (=trainers), 25 enthusiastic medical assistants (=participants) to participate at the event in Kyiv and make the HRES born again! After this romantic start, AEGEE-Kyiv and ACA got on pretty well, moving to the thinking stage of their relationship: clarifying their vision and starting discussing about financial issues. AEGEE-Kyiv, as a very caring and enthusiastic partner was working hard to create the best circumstances, she also asked for a “family aid” (=grant) from Youth in Action. Unfortunately, this one thing didn’t work out as planned, but the relationship was much stronger than to block at this point.

 Current situation

ACA, A-Kyiv and the docs are already working hard on the preparations. They already got to know each other, discussed their expectations of each other, agreed on a timeline, responsibility and task division etc. So the labour room is getting prepared for the birth of HRES ;)

Stay tuned for the next chapter of the story and pay attention to the open calls for “nurses” and “medical assistants” in February!

In this happy relationship & HRES project, 5 people are already highly involved:

Kateryna Kozhemiakina, AEGEE-Kyiv – local coordinator; Andrii Otrishko, AEGEE-Kyiv – former president, first steps of the relationship;

  • Eduardo Mougin, AEGEE-Academy – contact person from ACA; Annamária Németh, AEGEE-Budapest – co-manager; Bernadett Pólya, AEGEE-Budapest – manager.
