{"id":14770,"date":"2012-12-05T10:57:26","date_gmt":"2012-12-05T08:57:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.zeus.aegee.org\/magazine\/?p=14770"},"modified":"2012-12-19T17:46:24","modified_gmt":"2012-12-19T15:46:24","slug":"above-us-the-same-sky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zeus.aegee.org\/magazine\/2012\/12\/05\/above-us-the-same-sky\/","title":{"rendered":"Above us, the same sky"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After the historical result of the vote during the last General Assembly of the\u00a0<strong>United Nations<\/strong>\u00a0held on the 28th November 2012, a possible new chapter opened in the history of the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>With an overwhelming majority, the United Nations welcomed the\u00a0<strong>Palestinian Authority<\/strong>\u00a0as \u201cNon-member observer State\u201d, upgrading it from the previous status of \u201centity\u201d, and in this way implicitly recognising Palestine as a State.<\/p>\n<p>While Europe was once again divided on the matter, with the\u00a0<strong>Czech Republic<\/strong>\u00a0voting against and nine states\u00a0abstaining from the vote, a further step has been taken in the direction of a long-lasting peace in the area.<\/p>\n<p>However, not only Europe was divided on the vote. While\u00a0<strong>Mahmoud\u00a0Abbas<\/strong>, President of the Palestinian Authority and Chair of the <strong>Palestinian Liberation Organisation<\/strong>, welcomed the decision of the UN, declaring that the intention of the bid was not \u201c<em>to delegitimize a State (Israel) established years ago, but rather to affirm the legitimacy of the State that must now achieve its independence<\/em>\u201d, a part of Palestinians felt indignation at a decision that means losing their rights and which was agreed by somebody not entitled to represent all Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>We must keep in mind that the Palestinian territory is divided in two parts: the West Bank, under control of the Palestinian Authority, and Gaza, governed by the\u00a0<strong>Hamas<\/strong>\u00a0which, through its leader\u00a0<strong>Khaled Meshaal<\/strong>, backed Abbas as a joint strategy to empower all Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>Will the bid change anything? Will this decision help the peace process between Israel and Palestine?<\/p>\n<p>While <strong>Hamas<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Fatah<\/strong>\u00a0are getting closer, the \u201csymbolic\u201d decision taken by the United Nations can be a starting point for a new era. European votes showed that rather than giving unconditional support to Israel, what really matters is the end of hostility.
